Renan Pacson : Preview Emerging Fashion Talents 2014

Preview Magazine August 2014::

From the words of Preview’s editor-in-chief Pauline Suaco-Juan ::

We introduce 10 emerging fashion talents. In my 14 years with Preview, this story has always been one of my favorites, and a pleasure to do. In lieu of a contest this year, the team has put together a stellar line-up of designers whose works we’ve been tracking for roughly a year now and whose designs have made our hearts beat a little faster. Fashion director Daryl Chang wanted to recreate fashion advertisements, and worked with the young designers on the look of their pages.”

BACKSTORY: Like others, Renan started off from the simples of beginnings. Growing up in a small town, the mere thought of designing as a career did not once cross his mind. “Fashion courses are non-existent where I come from,”  he says as he recalls spending his childhood making dresses made of paper. When the time came for his senior prom, Renan turned to the pages of PREVIEW‘s December 2001 issue for outfit inspiration. Renan says, “I was totally fascinated and enthralled by the [fashion] industry,” as he leafed through the pages with much glee. Upon graduating with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management, he then heeded the calling by taking up further studies in Clothing Technology at the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

SPECIALTY: Outerwear and over-sized shirts

FASHION HEROES: Jojie Lloren, Joey Samson, Ivar Aseron, Karl Lagerfeld, Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens. Renan’s greatest mentor, however, is the late Mel Vergel de Dios. “He was the one who opened the proverbial door and let my size 11 feet inside the world of fashion

THE COLLECTION: The collection is called Auto-da-fé – a torture ritual done in the Middle Ages to punish apostates and heretics by burning. The idea came about after exchanging stories with a theology professor, which later on led him to dig deeper on the topic. Renan takes notes from the silhouette of the sanbenito, the hues of blood and fire, and the texture of burning skin and bones to come up with the pieces that tell stories without compromising wearability. With the use of neoprene, faux leather, cotton knits and air-cool material, he injects his signature urban aesthetic, making them more practical but still sticking to his creative visions.

DREAM CLIENTS: Tilda Swinton, Bjork, Rihanna and the Olsen twins.

Truth be told, the first magazine I bought with my meager student’s allowance was PREVIEW‘s december 2001 issue. From then on, I have been reading their issue religiously every month. Years passed, and I still make it a point to get a copy every month. So you can’t imagine my excitement when fashion director Daryl Chang sent me an e-mail informing me that they would like to include me in this year’s list of PREVIEW EMERGING FASHION TALENT. No words to describe my excitement, yes, sort of dream come true!

Thank you very much to editor-in-chief Pauline Suaco-Juan, fashion director Daryl Chang, Zoe Laurente and the rest of PREVIEW team. I am deeply honored and immensely thankful for acknowledging my humble works.

cheers to fashion!
