Introducing the “Das Leben am Haverkamp“! Four designers —Anouk van Klaveren (1991), Christa van der Meer (1988), Dewi Bekker (1990) and Gino Anthonisse (1988) – joined forces and formed the collective Das Leben am Haverkamp after graduating from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Their unconventional approach to design and fashion results in thought-provoking, unpolished work, often inspired by alter egos, boyhood and floral curtains. New, uncharted territory is explored during the inventive performances and presentations of Das Leben am Haverkamp.

They collectively disagree on the imaginative borders created between disciplines. Together they create the novel context necessary for their unrestricted way of working and thinking. All the members of Das Leben am Haverkamp have their own individual label, and present it collectively. (text taken from DLAH facebook page)

I met Anouk back in London during the International Fashion Showcase, the only designer representing their country—the Netherlands. After a quick chat, I shamelessly asked her if I could crash her workshop in Netherlands as I would be flying there after the showcase, she willingly said yes.

I arrived in the Hague and found my way to Haverkamp (a 15-minute tram ride away from the central), Anouk was even kind enough to pick me up from the station. We entered a very industrialized building littered with paintings, sculptures and drawings as other artists occupy the building. On the second floor is the headquarters of Das Leben am Haverkamp, I was warmly welcomed by the other two designers of DLAH— Dewi and Gino (Christa was not present as it was her birthday, Happy birthday Christa!)

Over tea, we had a very pleasant and insightful chat about our inspirations, plans, struggles, creative processes, etc…they were even generous enough to share some techniques and tips and let me flicker through racks and racks of their samples. (i was like a kid in a candy store!)   Deeply grateful with the priceless pieces of information they shared. (can’t wait to apply it in my future projects)

The synergy of these four creative individuals could be felt within the walls of their studio. And a clever, systematic division of labor makes them a force to reckon with, a step way ahead of any designer striking it alone.  Being able to see their mood board makes me truly excited with new things they are currently working on. There was the Antwerp 6 that put their city in the global fashion map…watch out for Das Leben am Haverkamp as they soar and place the Hague into the same height (no doubt, even further)!

Thank you very much for welcoming me to your space where the magic happens. Cheers guys!

*Samenwerking; meaning collaborate/cooperate…one of my favorite english words (so powerful) I had to learn the dutch equivalent.
