When in Jakarta : SHOPS You Need to Know

I’m a lazy tourist, and a lazier shopper. Jakarta is littered with shopping malls everywhere, but it’s quite difficult to find a cool shop with great selection of goods. Forget the H&Ms and ZARAs, they are everywhere, anywhere in the world. I like concept boutiques more, but my first visit to Jakarta last April proved to be quite a challenge to find these shops. My 2nd visit this June was more fruitful as I get to know more about the city.

I am listing down my favourite shops/spots that are definitely worth visiting::

Fairgrounds at SCBD

It’s a hip complex with restos, bars and home to OTOKO Store and Escalier.

VISVIM fan? They stock it here! They have well-curated selection of clothes perfect for a GQ-reading-yuppie. If you are a David Guison, this store is for you.

Putting this on the list just because they stock MA Julius. (40% OFF when I visited today!)

I accidentally found this store when I was furniture-hunting around Kemang area. Stussy…Marcelo Burlon….707 got it! Next to it is ak.sa.ra. bookshop where one can spend hours just browsing through their selection of magazines and cute-nothings.  On the 2nd level is CASA, laid-back place to sip ice tea while contemplating which Marcelo Burlon  to get… the moon snake tshirt or the palm angels hands tee?!?

Fou Store

Big selection of Comme des Garçons! (they even stock the cray-cray pieces from the mainline) My favourite store in Jakarta so far (if only I have the bajillions of rupiah to match my love for them!) The only store in Jakarta that stocks Rick Owens. Totally impressed with their brand selection: Vetements, Enfold, Yang Li, Raf Simons, Margiela …i had a hard time looking for it, but totally worth-it! They are still housed in an apartment (so better schedule an appointment if you want to visit) but they are moving to a commercial space come September for their grand opening. Be ready to max out your card!

FYI: most of the items are 50% off right now!

I’m not really fond of going to the malls, but these two have to be on the list ::

I stumbled upon TESMAK wooden glasses in Instagram and I wanted to personally see it before buying online; googling where it is stocked, it led me to Mezzo store located in Kuningan City which is just few blocks away from where I stay. Lo and behold, when I visited, they were on SALE (Ramadan SALE) They have a corner space for Y3 (clothing, footwear, accessories) Y3 shoes were 70% off! Very hard to resist!

The Goods Dept.

Looking for local Indonesian street wear labels?!? They have it here. They also carry limited-edition Adidas and Nike pieces (they did a special release of the Yeezy Boost 350 here). So far, I’ve visited two of their branches, the one in Lotte Mall is few steps away from where I stay, but the one in Pacific Plaza got better range of items to choose from. Must-buy are the printed shirts from Well Born and Monstore. Look no further if you are searching for gift ideas and “pasalubong” (that won’t hurt your pocket) for your discerning friends, for Rp 100,000 you could find one here.
